چکیده

Cold acclimation protects plants from temperate regions of the world from the deleterious effects of low and freezing temperatures. This is through a series of transcriptional, regulatory and metabolic changes that enable continued growth and survival. The focus in this thesis is to increase our understanding of the cold acclimation process and there by open the door to development of cold hardy oat (Avena sativa) varieties for the Nordic climate conditions. We started by sequencing 9,792 oat ESTs from a cDNA library prepared from pooled total RNA extracted from cold induced oat plants. These sequences were assembled into a UniGene ser of 2,800 sequences, 398 displayed homology to genes previously reported to be involved in cold acclimation. The CBF factor family have a key regulatory role during cold acclimation and in our UniGene set we found four oat CBF

Efficiency of cold hardiness induction by desiccation stress in four winter cereals.

A number of defined desiccation treatments without low temperature exposure were able to induce freezing tolerance in 20 cultivars of winter cereals. A maximal degree of freezing tolerance was induced in epicotyls at 24 degrees C in 24 hours at 40% relative humidity in rye and wheat, 7 days at 54% RH in barley, and 4 days at 70% RH in oats. Freezing tolerance was not correlated to water content...

Is photosynthetic acclimation to low temperature controlled by capacities for storage and growth at low temperature? Results from comparative studies of grasses and trees

The ability of warm-grown leaves to acclimate their photosynthetic machinery to low, non-freezing temperature was compared for contrasting species of grasses and trees. All trees (Betula pubescens, Salix sp. and Picea abies), and young plants of one of the grasses (Hordeum vulgare) showed acclimation of photosynthesis while the other two grasses (Phalaris arundinacea and Festuca ovina) did not....

Temperature sensing and cold acclimation.

The fundamental question in cold acclimation is how do plants perceive the low but nonfreezing temperatures that activate cold acclimation responses. New findings in the past year suggest that changes in membrane fluidity, cytoskeleton rearrangement, and calcium influxes are among the earliest events taking place in plants upon exposure to low nonfreezing temperatures. In the cyanobacterium Syn...

Time-dependent deacclimation after cold acclimation in Arabidopsis thaliana accessions

During low temperature exposure, Arabidopsis thaliana and many other plants from temperate climates increase in freezing tolerance in a process termed cold acclimation. However, the correct timing and rate of deacclimation, resulting in loss of freezing tolerance and initiation of growth is equally important for plant fitness and survival. While the molecular basis of cold acclimation has been ...

Future Perspectives in Plant Biology Molecular Basis of Plant Cold Acclimation: Insights Gained from Studying the CBF Cold Response Pathway

For the 75th Anniversary Issue of Plant Physiology, I contributed an article (Thomashow, 2001) in which I highlighted recent advances in the identification of genes with roles in cold acclimation: the process whereby certain plants increase in freezing tolerance in response to low nonfreezing temperatures. At that time, about 20 Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) genes had been identified as co...
